Police crackdown on seasonal drunkenness

Figures released today show that between January and the end of November this year there were 62 grave and criminal assaults, compared with 84 for the same period in 2002.The 26 per cent decrease has been attributed in part to special police Operation Focus initiatives, which have targeted so-called ‘hot spots’.

This zero tolerance policy that has helped make the streets safer this year will be in operation again this weekend. The police warned today that binge drinkers who cause problems would be arrested.Extra officers will be out in force as part of the police Operation Focus ‘Peacekeeper’ crackdown for what is traditionally one of the busiest weekends of the year.
