Price of bread to rise in 2004

The industry in the UK is bracing itself for a ten per cent price rise and although the exact increase has not been specified for Jersey, it is thought that local price rises will reflect those in the UK.The price hikes are being blamed on the hot summer which scorched the earth and damaged crops of wheat across Europe creating a mass shortage.CI Bakery has warned that although they have been absorbing costs so far, an increase this time seems unavoidable.

The company, the largest baker on the Island, also said that all types of bread will be affected.’The difficulties currently being experienced with wheat supply are global and are effecting the entire baking industry,’ said marketing manager Lynda Silk.

‘We would like to reassure our customers that we will continue to supply the local products at the best possible prices.

CI Bakery get all of their flour from Rank Hovis in the UK who is the largest flour supplier in the country.

‘At this stage we honestly do not know how much the rises are expected to be but we are in negotiation with our suppliers to get the best deal possible.’
