Could Covent Garden be brought to old abattoir

The Waterfront Enterprise Board met development company Cool Waters to discuss the plans on Friday but WEB managing director David Margason said he was as yet unable to reveal the details. He said that WEB had hoped to be submitting the plans before Christmas but conceded that they were now a few weeks behind schedule. He said there were ‘ongoing discussions’ with bus operator Connex to be concluded before a final scheme could be submitted to Planning.

‘It is a complex scheme,’ he said. The development – to be known as Liberation Place – will include a modern transport centre as well as shops, restaurants and cafés.

It is believed the derelict abattoir buildings will be restored in a way that will retain the historic architecture. There was much controversy earlier this year over the appointment of Cool Waters as preferred developer for the Island Site scheme, a contract understood to be worth at least £50m.

Allegations were made by rival bidder Dandara that Cool Waters was given the opportunity to make changes to their bid before it was considered by the WEB board.
