Crash goes the wonder of Woolies

The shop had been having trouble with its computer system all day, and at around 7 pm customers were told that the tills were having to be shut down because of problems with the mainframe computer.Staff at the head office in the UK then had to work throughout the night to sort out the problem so that the store could reopen at 9 am today.Jersey general manager John Laggett said that it was better that the problems had revealed themselves last night, because that meant that things would run smoothly for the final late-night shopping evening tonight.

He said: ‘In the old days you could just turn a handle and carry on, but not any more.

‘The computers had been playing up, and then towards the end of the evening the tills were crashing.

We thought that it was better to close rather than take a chance, and there were not many people around.’He added that he was looking forward to a particularly busy evening tonight, when the store will be open, along with most of the other stores in town, until 9 pm.
