Trinity Shield: Banahan double lifts trophy-holders

The winners booked a semi-final game with St Saviour, 3-0 winners against St Martin, while the other semi will be between St Clement, who won 7-3 at St Lawrence, and St Peter, 6-0 victors at home to St John.At St Ouen, the hosts gave a fine account of themselves against well-drilled opponents and a late second goal eventually gave last season’s runners-up a brief hope of forcing the game into extra time.Chris Andrews, wearing odd boots – one white and the other black – shot St Brelade ahead inside ten minutes and only some solid defending in the centre of defence from Chris Wynn and Tim Crowell kept St Brelade at bay for the remainder of the half.Anthony Marett equalised with a long-range cross-goal effort into a top corner shortly after the resumption before two goals in quick succession midway through the period put the holders firmly in control.Paul Banahan nodded St Brelade ahead for the second time after goalkeeper Jimmy Styles produced a great block to deny Andrews and shortly after, Styles uncharacteristically let the ball slip through his hands for St Brelade’s third, a powerful close-range header from Banahan after a cross to the far post by Andrews.Styles then kept his side in the game with fine stops to deny Banahan and Andrews before substitute Daniel Huddlestone grabbed a late second goal for St Ouen after his shot deflected past goalkeeper Jack Jouanny. Two goals from junior Brett Pitman and one from Luc Le Mière took St Saviour to a 3-0 win over St Martin at Clos des Pauvres, the visitors missing a penalty kick as Richard Russell’s shot sailed over a crossbar.St Peter scored all six goals against St John in the second half, on target at St Peter were Bradley Cooper (two), Chris Maguire, Ben Burton, Stuart Cameron and Ian Crocker.Top scorers on the day were St Clement whose 7-3 win at St Lawrence came courtesy of a hat-trick from junior Luke Watson, two from Sean Anderton and singles by Dave Watson and Bruce Bell.Danny Bosio replied twice and Ross Goodchild once. The semi-finals are scheduled for Wednesday 5 May, 2004 with the final taking place three days later at Springfield.
