Cross-country:Spartans eye medals in Hampshire

The Jersey senior women did exceptionally well to finish in second place in the team event 12 months ago and, with three of the four counters travelling once more, they will be hopeful of capturing a medal again.Captain Jo McGarry is joined by vets Sue Le Ruez, Sarah Bruce, Amanda Le Verdier and Sylvia Thompson.

The women defend their vets winners’ trophy and the in-form Sue Le Ruez defends her 45+ title. The mens’ party of captain Peter Le Couilliard, Jerry Keen, Phil Morris, Nick Gorrod and Paul Raimbault are all vets, but may struggle to emulate their third place position gained last time around in this category.

Le Couilliard will, however, be looking for another individual medal in the 50+ category. With the veterans continuing to form the backbone of Jersey running it is very encouraging to see the emergence of a junior training squad under Paul Raimbault’s guidance.

Representing the club in Hampshire are Ryan Hodgson, Jamie Sewrey, Richard Stilwell and the brother/sister combinations of Robert and Jennie Harrop and Toby and Robyn Edwards. As yet numbers are too low to form teams for these championships and it will be, for most of these youngsters, their first major race in which gaining experience will come before any realistic medal hopes.
