Jersey Irish honour sporting heroes

A well-attended and lively evening at the Royal Hotel, David Place, had the association’s annual awards as the highlight along with interviews with two giants of Irish sport, former British and Irish Lion prop Paul Wallace and Dublin county gaelic footballer Dessie Farrell.Brendan Dolan won the vote for Jersey’s gaelic footballer of the year, but the evening belonged to the hurlers who were presented with the London Intermediate trophy, following their successful appeal against the illegal selections made by their final opponents Clon Na Gael last November. The club’s roll of honour was added to, with club stalwarts Davy Russell and Kevin McDonald, the evening’s accomplished master of ceremonies, being recognised along with long-time supporter and guest of honour Larry O’Leary – the chairman of the London County Association.Dermot Crowe, of the Sunday Independent, was another guest of honour who was interviewed on the state of hurling in Ireland.Adrian Henchy, who is leaving the Island this week, also received an award and a great reception, for the tremendous work and influence he has had within the association during his five years in Jersey.A simply splended evening, it should once again have helped in vital fund-raising for the regular out-of-Island matches.
