Charity ‘snubbed’ by States trust project

ACET Jersey has accused States Members of failing to recognise and support the valuable work it does in the community and says the money would be better spent with them. The charity, which promotes integration and community relations in the Island, already has to raise half its budget from sources other than the States and is currently fighting to secure realistic grants to continue its work with minority groups. The organisation has also been warned by Health and Social Services that it is the first in line to lose its grant in 2005.This week the States approved the setting up of a Jersey Community Relations Trust, which will have ten trustees and work towards eliminating discrimination in the Island. But ACET executive director Rosemary Ruddy believes the organisation, based in Route du Fort, has already proved its worth, has a five-year strategy, an office, experienced staff and a firm foundation to build on.She said: ‘While the aim of the proposed new trust – to eliminate discrimination on any ground – appears laudable, I do not believe spending £100,000 on increasing bureaucracy instead of supporting an organisation with a proven track record of making a positive difference in the lives of hundreds of ordinary men and women is the right way forward.
