Leading 5-3 at half time on a heavy, gale-lashed pitch Jersey faced a routine penalty kick ten minutes from time that would have seen them fall behind, 6-3, to last season’s Hampshire Plate winners.
But the kick fell just short – and seconds later Jersey grounded their second try, which proved to be the last score of the game.
The Alton kick was collected by lock Alex Whitehead under the posts and he put Spencer Adams on his way, with the try eventually being scored by flying wing Luke Le Sueur, from 40 yards out, via the hands of Andrew Woodward and several of the back division.
The sensational score earns Jersey, containing many of last season’s Hampshire Cup winners, a tie away to Bury, St Edmunds, the National Plate trophy holders, next weekend.
