New Jersey charity to help Burmese people

The Jersey Burma Group has been set up by Richard Farnham, Richard Van Neste and Moira Springate in response to the troubles in the country, which was the scene of pro-democracy protests last year.

The Burma protests saw thousands of monks take to the streets before they were rounded up and detained by the country’s military government. The demonstrations were originally to oppose the fuel price rises which led to a sharp increase in the price of consumer goods in Burma.

One of the Jersey group members is a close friend of the sister-in-law of Aung San Suu Kyi, a pro-democracy campaigner and leader of the opposition National League for Democracy party who has spent more than 11 years detained under the country’s military regime.
