Single day for Constables’ elections approved

The 12 Constables will now be invited to step down and stand again on the same day as the Islandwide Senatorial poll – but the recently re-elected Constable of St Helier has already said he is unlikely to give up his seat.

The result of yesterday’s debate means that after almost a week of debates that have taken place since 2005, there will not be any reform of the States Chamber.

Members overturned the one change they had made last year when backing Deputy Ian Gorst’s amendment reducing Constables’ terms back from four to three years, and ruled out the others, including a universal four-year term and the removal of four Senators.
