A hardy perennial herself, Ivy Hébert will be with her family at a birthday tea party this afternoon organised by her niece, Annette South. It was also hoped that a telegram from the Queen, delivered from Government House, would be among the many congratulatory messages.
Mrs Hébert attributes her longevity to her farming background, and Mrs South said that her aunt had always worked hard and never really had any vices.
‘She puts her long life down to cooking with fresh vegetables every day and making what she calls ”proper” meals,’ said Mrs South. ‘She loves her garden and it’s obviously been very good for her. She lives for the summer, when she can get among her plants, and despite saying each year that she thinks it may be too much for her, she always ends up out there digging, planting and weeding.’
