Two more dairy farms shut down

Cattle from Le Hurel, Trinity, and Highstead Farm, St Saviour, were on the ferry last night, destined for UK farms, and there are plans to move dozens more over the next few days if the sea stays calm. Overall, nearly 100 cows from Le Hurel and about 40 from Highstead will be leaving the Island in the next few months.

But both farms have ensured that the strong line of genetics in Jersey is continued with some of their best cows remaining here after being sold to other farmers.

It means that three dairy farms have now pulled out after opting for the buyout scheme made available last November. Jersey Dairy has lost two million litres of milk from its yearly production, but managing director Eamion Fenlon said that the process was a case of ‘pruning the tree’.
