The Senator said that the treaty will not affect the Island’s relationship with the EU or its consititutional relationship with the British Crown or force the States to accept EU policies.
The Lisbon Treaty redefines the European Union by redistributing voting rights, removing some national vetoes, and creating new powers in justice and home affairs.
It was agreed by EU heads of state in December after the proposed new Constitution was rejected in 2005, but has still got to be ratified by the parliaments of member states.
