Average three-bed home now £470,000

Virtually all buyers seeking mortgages to purchase homes were finance industry workers but only one in 20 was a J-category employee.

The latest figures released today for a three-bedroom house showed a £21,000 increase in three months – to ?470,000.

The house prices index compiled by the States Statistics Unit shows that prices soared by 20 per cent in the year to the end of December.

The average cost of a home with four bedrooms or more rose from ?485,000 at the end of 2006 to ?626,000 in the 12 months to December 2007, an increase of 17 per cent.

The rocketing prices have been described as ‘appalling’ by trade union official Nick Corbel.
