First-half show earns vital points for Jersey RFC

And while two-late unconverted tries from the hosts, the second deep into stoppage time, underlined that the closing stages were far from comfortable, over the 80 minutes Jersey deserved to maintain their unbeaten record and one-point lead over London South II championship rivals Hayward’s Heath.

Beckenham, thrashed at St Peter early on in the season, but still placed sixth in this highly competitive division, had little answer to Jersey’s first-half performance which earned them a 22-6 lead.

Jon Swift kicked one of two early penalty awards to edge Jersey ahead, but Beckenham replied in kind.

Flanker Graham Bell, returning after a three-week absence, went over the Beckenham line following a forward drive, for a score converted by Swift, which gave Jersey a 10-3 lead.

With Jersey spreading the ball to their wings far more than in recent weeks, the speedy Ryan Morgan took advantage to sidestep two opponents before touching down in the left-hand corner to give the visitors’ a solid base.

Beckenham chipped away three points with another successful penalty, but Steve O’Brien’s 50-metre run added more daylight to the score, with Swift adding the extra points.
