There will always be GST I guess but it just won’t be the same as tutting and saying: ‘It’s caveat emptor over here, mate. Buyer beware, that’s the only way here.’

Legal protection will be such a novelty. No longer will be able to simply whinge to UK-based pals that life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be over here.

Those heels that sheared off on first wearing, that builder whose job title should instead have just been tea-drinker, there will now be something that you can do about it. A consumer law in Jersey really should come under the heading of about bloody time.

In fact, you can’t help wondering, given that consumer rights and protection have been the norm in the UK for – not to put too fine a point on it – decades, we really have taken quite some time to catch on to this one.

At last the low-level grumbling has had an effect and even if you never have cause to use it, it is just nice to know that legislation will, at long last, be there.
