Fishermen in call for action on fuel costs

ISLAND fishermen are meeting Economic Development Minister Philip Ozouf this evening to raise their concerns about rising diesel prices.

They will ask Senator Ozouf if the States can help the industry, which now has deep concerns about its future.

Jersey Fishermen’s Association secretary Don Thompson, who purchases their fuel, said that the members were very worried about the current situation. He said: ‘They believe that if they don’t do something about their future now, they may not have a future.’

The recent increase of 10p a litre over a two-week period had shocked fishermen, he said. ‘They are used to prices fluctuating at a rate of 1p or 2p a month, but this has really shocked them. At the moment many of them are breaking even rather than making a profit.’
