The green machine

MAVIS Le Marquand, who partnered Sheila Syvret to the pairs silver medal in the women’s world outdoor championships at Ayr in 1992, is looking forward to her new role – as Jersey’s team manager in the home international series in Belfast next week.

‘I’m very excited about it, and delighted that they asked me to do the job,’ she said. ‘The fact that I have played at international level means that I know what players want in a manager, and I will try to fit the bill.’

Although virtually retired from playing bowls, she has not cut herself off from the sport.

‘I only play indoors these days, but I go around and watch, and socialise with the players, so I am in touch with what’s happening,’ she said. ‘We have a very capable squad, all of whom are excellent players, so I have no worries on that score. My role is to help them in any way I can, and to make sure they don’t lose their nerve when the pressure is on.’
