Move to close loophole on care worker checks

PEOPLE working in private care homes in Jersey are escaping police checks because their managers do not have the powers to vet them.

At the moment there is no law to allow care home owners and managers in the charitable and private sectors to obtain police record checks on their staff.

Health Minister Ben Shenton is currently in discussions with the police to see if it is possible to make a minor amendment to the law which will enable care home employers to check their staff.

Answering a question from Deputy Roy Le Hérissier in the States this week, Health Minister Ben Shenton said: ‘The robust regulation of care workers in care and residential homes will be introduced at the earliest possible time. It is very clear that the current regulatory framework for such workers has over time become deficient as standards have increased and the need for vigilance and vetting has similarly increased.
