Fried bread for dinner and 50p left on the meter

A MOTHER who feels let down by the new income support system has spoken of her struggle to make ends meet.

Jersey-born Susie Diniz (20) moved her parents into her two-bedroom flat earlier this year because she alone could not afford to pay bills or buy food for herself and her four-year-old son while Social Security was processing her income support application.

Miss Diniz said: ‘It got to the point where I had no money at all. I had 50p left on the electric meter and our dinner was fried bread. I had to ask my parents for help.’ Miss Diniz, who works as a human resources administrator, is paying £800 a month on rent and £416 a month for after-school and holiday care for her son, Ruben.

‘That’s my wages literally gone,’ she said. ‘It was the cheapest child care and rent I could find. I challenge anyone to find a two-bedroom flat that will allow children for less than £800.’
