Demo brings home fire safety message

CHILDREN look on in shock as they are shown the devastating effects of throwing water on a chip pan fire.

The demonstration by the Fire and Rescue Service was part of a series of talks and displays held during Safety in Action Week.

The event at Highlands College, run by the Child Accident Prevention Jersey charity, also included talks from other agencies on how children can stay safe on the beach, on building sites, in the garden and on the roads. It also included first aid advice.

Marc Le Cornu, community safety officer, said: ‘Our talk was all about how children can reduce the risk of being injured in a fire.

‘We spoke about issues such as making a fire escape plan, and how to properly escape from a property, as well as how to put out a fire. It is very important to talk to children about fire safety.

‘Children will often wake up first if there is a fire in the home, so it is extremely important that they know what to do. It is also important that parents involve their children when making a fire escape plan. We need to get children aware of the issues at a very early age.’

Last month the JEP joined forces with the Fire and Rescue Service to launch the Make a Plan campaign.

Every Islander is offered a home fire safety visit, in which firefighters visit homes to give safety advice and, if it is needed, fit a free smoke alarm.
