Young tennis stars on road to Wimbledon

TWO of Jersey’s best young tennis players will get another chance to play at Wimbledon next month, having again fought off competition from Guernsey and Alderney.

Caesarean Tennis Club’s Scott Clayton and Octavia Lamb, from Grainville Tennis Club, won the Channel Islands final of the Road to Wimbledon competition at Les Ormes last weekend for the second year running.

They will now head to the All England Club in SW19 to play against the top youngsters from the UK’s 44 counties. In the run-up to Sunday’s event each CI club had held knockout draws to produce ten boys and nine girls, aged 14 and under, for the Les Ormes finals.

Boys’ runner up Louis Sangan, of Les Ormes, had an impressive run to get to the final. He beat Grainville’s Max Vasilou in the quarter-finals 6-2, 6-1 and the Caesarean’s Jamie Beaumont 6-3 6-2 in the semi-finals, before he lost the final to Clayton 6-0 6-2. In the girls semis, Grainville’s Natasha de Freitas beat Alyssia Johnson 6-2, 6-1 and Lamb beat Nicole Moir 6-0, 6-1. Lamb then met Grainville’s Natasha de Freitas in a tough final that she eventually won 6-1, 6-4.
