ENVIRONMENT Minister Freddie Cohen has ruled out a public inquiry into the proposed £106 million incinerator to be built at La Collette.
The Senator told the States on Tuesday that he saw no need for a public inquiry as a decision had already been taken about the size of the planning envelope of the site.
St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft contended that there should be a public planning inquiry as the Island Plan law said that an inquiry could be held into the approval of any building that would have a significant impact on the wider environment.
He said that public inquiries were acceptable elsewhere in the world and added: ‘Should not an energy-from-waste plant be the subject of such an inquiry given the impact it will have?’ But Senator Cohen said that an inquiry was not warranted as in-principle approval had previously been granted.
