Jersey hold Havant to ‘satisfying’ 1-1 draw

JERSEY’S footballers drew 1-1 with Havant and Waterlooville on Saturday, having lost to the side 4-0 on Thursday.

Against a team which had beaten Swansea and were twice in the lead against Liverpool in the FA Cup before going down to them 5-2 last season, the Island XI played such quality football that Island manager Dave Kennedy said afterwards: ‘This was one of the most satisfying performances I’ve had as Island manager.

‘None of the players looked out of place, and I feel that after Thursday’s performance each one of them felt the scoreline didn’t reflect how well they played. The goal that they scored was the result of sloppy defending, but by then we could have been two goals up. The quality of football we played was good, and we’d already had our chances.

‘From the start I asked the players to compete, and we began with 11 of the best players I had to choose from. Dave Le Roux, Mark Brown, Paul Aitken and Jack Cannon all played well, although I’m not taking anything away from the rest of the team. When they put their mind to it, this Jersey side play with invention and flair.’
