Date set for Nordic tax pact

THE date has been set for Jersey to sign a tax information exchange agreement with the Nordic countries.

Chief Minister Frank Walker along with Martin de Forest Brown, director of international finance, and Colin Powell, chairman of the Jersey Financial Services Commission, will fly to Helsinki to meet finance ministers from the Nordic countries on 28 October and put pen to paper.

The Nordic countries, with which Guernsey will also sign an agreement, are Greenland, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and the Faroes.

However, signing the agreement does not mean that the policy comes into force with immediate effect. Mr Powell (pictured) explained: ‘Once the agreement has been signed, it then has to go through the parliamentary process, which usually takes six months or so, and be ratified by the States. So it could be some time before it is in place.’
