Farmers get early subsidy

HALF a million pounds in farm subsidies is being handed out early to help growers and producers cope with rising costs.

Farmers will receive just over £1m in subsidies in 2008 under the ‘Single Area Payment Scheme’, and Assistant Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean says that the early payment will help farmers struggling with inflation.

Energy, fertilisers and feed have all become a lot more expensive over the last year.

The early payments have been welcomed by Jersey Farmers’ Union president John Le Maistre and Jersey Milk Marketing Board chairman Andrew Le Gallais.

Mr Le Maistre, who raises cattle and grows potatoes and courgettes at his Grouville farm, said the move would help farmers meet their bills.
