Jersey ‘could be another Dunblane’

JERSEY could become the scene of another Dunblane unless the Island’s guns laws are changed, a firearms officer has warned.

Centenier Jim Rigby, the gun officer for St Saviour (pictured), said that a meeting is needed to discuss ways of tightening up firearms laws before the Island suffers a shooting tragedy.

He spoke out after Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabularies said that measures to protect Islanders from illegally owned firearms were ‘inconsistent and ineffective’.

The independent report raised serious concerns about the current licensing system and the fact that it is Constables who grant the licences and the States police who keep a register of firearms owners.
