States fund company backing Island goods

THE States of Jersey are funding a new company that has been set up to promote Genuine Jersey products at home and overseas.

Jersey Product Promotion Ltd will be based initially at the Economic Development Department. Its task will be to increase sales of locally produced goods to Island residents and also to develop export initiatives.

The non-profit making Genuine Jersey Products Association was set up seven years ago with just 12 member businesses and this year received States funding of £80,000. The membership of Genuine Jersey has now grown to over 90 businesses and sole traders.

Among the members are hotels, growers, pottery makers, fisheries, artists and jewellers, Jersey Dairy, vineyards, butchers, and farm shops. Ken Syvret, the chairman of Genuine Jersey, said that until now promotional work had been carried out by public relations firm Direct Input, which was now providing PR services for the Economic Development Department.
