Kirsten boys facing real Tests

JERSEY coach Peter Kirsten and his brother Gary are going for glory at different levels of international cricket over the next week, while another sibling, Andy, waits in the wings.

Peter has finished his preparations with Jersey at the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division IV, with younger brother Gary getting India ready to host a Test series against Australia. But there are two Kirsten brothers focussed on the other end of the international cricket spectrum and whether they can coach their respective sides to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.

Peter’s Jersey begin their quest today against hosts Tanzania, with the duo joined by Afghanistan, Fiji, Hong Kong and Italy in an 18-match tournament over eight days on the next step on the road to qualification for Asia in 2011.

And if Peter and Jersey can progress in Dar Es Salaam next week and then again Argentina in January, that would take them closer to a potential meeting with Kenya in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in April. And they happen to be coached by another Kirsten boy, Andy.

For that to happen, Jersey will have to be in the top two of the six teams in action in Africa. That will send them to the Division III event in Argentina and that is the final step towards the 12-team qualifier featuring the likes of Canada, Kenya and Scotland. Four sides will make it from the qualifier to the World Cup.
