Fountain plan for roundabout

THE Queen’s Road roundabout which is currently covered in election posters may have a different sort of decoration on it if St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft gets his way.

He wants to get permission to install a fountain in the centre of the roundabout similar to the one in St Helier’s twin town of Funchal. He has written to Transport and Technical Services to see if the Parish in Community Bloom group could be allowed to raise the cash to get the fountain installed.

But Transport has told him that the roundabout should not have any obstructions to visibility. It adds that there is no cash to install or maintain a fountain of that magnitude.

Mr Crowcroft said that officers were turning a blind eye to the profusion of election banners currently in place on the roundabout, which have been blamed for distracting drivers. ‘There is no evidence that a fountain would distract anybody more than the election posters,’ he said.
