Crowds flock to cider fair

JERSEY Heritage’s celebration of cider-making proved to be ‘top of the pips’ with thousands of Islanders at Hamptonne country life museum over the weekend.

The two-day Faîs’sie d’Cidre sponsored by Jersey Tourism attracted more adults and children than ever before. The programme organised by Heritage Trust’s interpretation co-ordinator, Julia Coutanche, proved so popular that next year they are considering setting up a shuttle bus service to make the journey and parking easier.

Among the striking aspects of the event was the apple-crushing process by the hard-working team who included Elégant, the black French cob who pulled the wooden bar which operated the granite wheel of the traditional apple-crusher.

Ms Coutanche said that the event had been a huge success and they had been very lucky to have had such wonderful autumn weather in which to stage it just before National Apple Day on 21 October. She said: ‘Jersey Heritage’s role is to educate people about what life was like in the past by illustrating it in an entertaining way and encouraging people to hold on to important traditions of years ago and to keep them going.’
