Incinerator plan overcomes its final hurdle

DESPITE one politician branding the incinerator a ‘carbuncle’, the design of the £106m energy waste plant at La Collette has been approved by Environment Minister Freddie Cohen.

At a ministerial meeting yesterday, Senator Cohen approved the design by Hopkins Architects and specified that the firm be kept on until the end. He also said that landscape architects – Robert Townsend Architects – must be maintained until the end of the project and a timescale agreed.

In October last year, planning permission was granted for the incinerator and States Members approved the plans in July. At the meeting yesterday, St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft and Environment Scrutiny Panel chairman Deputy Rob Duhamel opposed what will be Jersey’s most expensive capital project.
