Walker dedicates victory to late friend

JAMES Walker has won the final Superleague Formula race of the season after a fantastic drive at Spanish circuit Jerez.

Walker, who was racing for Borussia Dortmund following the end of the World Series by Renault season, took victory despite missing practice and qualifying sessions while waiting for his car to be prepared.

The former Victoria College student fought off Galatasaray driver Alessandro Pier Guidi and ex-F1 driver Antonio Pizzonia to win the last race of the weekend, which he dedicated to close friend and Jerseyman Alex de Gruchy, who died in a plane crash last week.

Walker was forced to start race one from the pit lane, when his car’s steering column came loose on the way to the grid. Fast repairs soon got him underway and he set off in pursuit of the field, achieving a commendable 14th place finish. However Walker pulled back from fifth place in race two, pitting early and recording fast lap times to take a comfortable race win, capping a good 2008 season.
