New move to set up a sex offenders register

PLANS for a UK-style Sex Offenders Register to protect Jersey children have been formally proposed to the States.

The law contains rules forcing convicted sex offenders to notify the police of their names, addresses and any travel plans, and restraining orders against paedophiles who are considered to be a threat to children.

These restraining orders can prohibit subjects from working with or carrying out activities with children or with people to whom they represent a threat. Breaking a Royal Court restraining order could result in a fine or prison sentence.

With exactly a week to go before the end of the first term of ministerial government, the Draft Sex Offenders (Jersey) Law 200- has been formally lodged by Home Affairs Minister Andrew Lewis (pictured). He said: ‘The aim of this law is to reduce the risk of sexual offences being committed by managing the risk posed to the public by sex offenders and those who may be sexual predators on children.’
