Drop the car park, says Deputy

PLANS for a car park and flats on the Ann Court site should be abandoned in favour of housing for the over-55s, according to a district Deputy.

Assistant Health Minister Judy Martin has tabled a proposition to drop the plans for a multi-storey car park and flats that were recently announced by Environment Minister Freddie Cohen.

Instead, she says that the site should be used for sheltered or warden-controlled social housing for the over-55s, citing figures published last month showing 314 units needed on the Housing department’s waiting list.

‘The States must show in 2009 that their priority is elderly people with basic daily needs rather than car accommodation,’ said the St Helier No 1 Deputy. ‘Can the States really let this super housing site be turned into a home for 800 cars?
