GALLERY: The Glencoe auction – an institution that remains as popular as ever

They were the founders of Glencoe auction sales, an organisation which is still going strong and attracting the local characters that make our Island community special.

Today the weekly sales come under the auspices of auctioneers and valuers Simon Drieu and Co Ltd, with Mr Drieu as the fast-speaking eagle-eyed auctioneer, standing atop his small stepladder to see above the crowd as he conducts the proceedings in his own special style.

Smartly dressed and wearing a flat cap, he pauses between lots for banter with the crowd, to move his stepladdes and to accept a welcome drink to oil his vocal chords.

Around him is a crowd that encapsulates Island life today.

Old Jerseymen with weathered faces and tall tales to tell rub shoulders with well-heeled collectors, visitors, young families looking for household bargains, millionaires and Islanders who simply love the place like an old family friend.

Some come to hear and speak Jèrriais, though today Polish and Portuguese are more often heard.

But in spite of the changes to Island life, as one bidder remarked recently, Glencoe is one of the last bastions of local culture.
