The break-in happened at a property in Alton Gardens, in Rouge Bouillon, where the defendant used to live four years ago.
At about 4.15 am on 28 July the occupant went into the lounge and noticed that the curtains were open slightly and the patio door had been forced.
The Magistrate’s Court heard that the man contacted the police, and crime-scene officers took fingerprints from the door and the mechanism.
Later in the morning, the occupant realised that his phone had gone missing, so he decided to phone it. The court was told that it was answered by the 45-year-old defendant, who said that he had found it in Union Street and that he would hand it into the inquiry desk at the States police headquarters, which he did.
