Centenary celebrated with a song

Trixie Haines, who is a mother to Graham (73) moved to the Island three years ago to be close to her son, after suffering a fall in her home in Wimborne, Dorset.

St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft presented Mrs Haines with a card from the Queen and a trumpet fanfare was played in celebration of her centenary. Residents of the nursing home then sang a chorus of ‘happy birthday’ accompanied by the trumpet.

When opening her card from the Queen, Mrs Haines said: ‘I knew I made it to 100 for a good reason.

‘I’m a big fan of the Queen and am very loyal to her.’

Mrs Haines lost her first husband, Ken, in a road accident when their son Graham was just seven years old.

Mrs Haines used to sing in a big band with her late husband. She then later married Stuart, who was a captain in the Merchant Navy and based in Poole. He died in 1982.

When the 100-year-old first moved to the Island she lived with her son and his wife, Jean, but moved into Glanville in May this year after fracturing her leg and spending time in hospital.

She said: ‘I used to travel to the UK singing in big bands. My favourite singer of all time is Ella Fitzgerald. I love listening to music, but I only sing for my own amusement now. It is a long time ago now that my singing career started.’

When asked what the secret to living to 100 was, she said: ‘I have always slept well, I eat well and I laugh a lot.’
