Artists invited to apply for castle lock-in

This will be the fourth in the series of lock-ins, in which artists, working in areas such as music, dance, visual arts, literature and performance, are brought together to learn from each other and respond to their surroundings. The idea is to provide artists with time and space to consider new ways of working and collaborating with people of different practices.

ArtHouse Jersey (formerly the Jersey Arts Trust) is behind the project and is appealing for two artists from Jersey to take part, who will be creating work alongside up to ten international artists.

The artists will be in residence at Elizabeth Castle from Sunday 1 to Tuesday 10 October and will be taken through a series of tasks that encourage teamwork and creative thinking. The collaborative pieces will then be showcased to an audience on the last two days.

The project will be fully residential, with no artist leaving Elizabeth Castle at any point during the process – they will truly be ‘locked in’.

ArtHouse Jersey Director Tom Dingle said: ‘This is a cross art opportunity and we’re looking for people of all denominations of the arts – writers, performers, musicians, singers, anyone. They need to have a firm commitment to their craft and either be practising or training, or at least be experienced in their field.’

And as the artists will be confined to the castle for the duration of the project, they need to realise the facilities may not be of hotel-luxury standard. ‘One of the things we’re clear about is that it’s rustic and collaborative,’ said Mr Dingle. ‘But it’s one of those experiences that will be the most amazing opportunity for the right people. They’ll be able to try things they’ve not tried before and really broaden their horizons. In the past it’s been transformative for some, and the week really unlocked something in them,’ he said.

Applications are invited from Jersey-based artists who are over 18 years old, and who practice any creative discipline. To apply, artists must send a completed application form and some examples of their work to Alice Bravery at ArtHouse Jersey. Application forms can be collected from the ArtHouse Jersey offices at Chateau Vermont or downloaded from the website arts.je. For more information, contact Alice on 617521 or email alice@arts.je. The deadline for submissions is Friday 1 September.
