Cricketers remember departed teammates

Simon Gueno and Kevin English played in the annual fixture between the respective clubs that they helped to found, Westerners and Walkovers, for a number of years.

Mr Gueno died of leukaemia in 2015 and the match was named in his memory, and now following Mr English’s death from pancreatic cancer last year it has been renamed in his honour too.

Tomorrow, starting at 2 pm, the teams, who will be marking the tenth anniversary of the fixture, will therefore be playing for the Simon Gueno/Kevin English Memorial Shield.

A Walkovers select XI will also take on a St John XI at 11 am and there will be bouncy castles, face painting, a barbecue and cake sale. The day, which takes place at Grainville playing fields, will raise money for Cystic Fibrosis, which Mr English suffered from, and Friends of Jersey Oncology.

Walkovers’ John Patterson said: ‘Sunday will be a great day where we hope family and friends of Simon and Kev will come and enjoy the bank holiday with us. We will be raising money but the emphasis is on having fun and enjoying the activities.’

Mr English’s widow, Charlotte, who will be attending the event with the couple’s two-year-old daughter, Paige, said: ‘How I would love for Kev to be here for this cricket family day. He would have loved it and would have loved to have shared the day with Paige.

‘My hope for Sunday is that people come and enjoy the day and enjoy spending some time with their families, while watching some cricket and helping to raise a bit of money for some good causes.’
