Town heritage to be feature of open day

Heritage Open Day is organised in the Island by the National Trust for Jersey. It allows the public free access to fascinating properties that are either not usually open, or would normally charge an entrance fee.

Properties due to open from 10 am to 4 pm, include the Foot Buildings and 4, 5 and 6 in Pitt Street which have been saved from demolition by the trust and are currently being refurbished.

Two walks led by local Blue Badge guides are also due to take place. Arthur Lamy will be walking around St Helier in the morning, focusing on town’s Regency splendour and in the afternoon Sue Hardy will be meandering around Havre des Pas looking at how industries – shipbuilding, agriculture and the military – helped shape the area.

Donna Le Marrec of the National Trust said that Brook Farm in St Saviour, Chapelles des Frères in St John and Victoria Tower above Gorey Harbour are among the properties that will also be open on Saturday.

‘Several special activities will be taking place over the course of the day,’ she said. ‘Fairtrade will be serving teas and coffees in the Chapelles des Frères, raising awareness of that organisation, and refreshments will also be available in the Foot Buildings.

‘Another special activity designed for families will be taking place at Victoria Tower where naturalist and conservationist Stephen Le Quesne will be running a “bio-blitz” [wildlife hunt] from 1 pm to 4 pm.’

Heritage Open Day is sponsored by Andium Homes. The full list of properties to be open can be found at nationaltrust.je. It advisable to book a place on the guided walks.
