Silkworth hope to raise £14,000 from challenge

The fourth Silkworth Extreme Challenge took place on Saturday and with sponsorship still coming in the organisers hope to have raised more than £14,000, taking the overall total since the event first started to more than £45,000.

Silkworth Lodge is the only residential rehabilitation treatment centre in the Channel Islands which supports people with drug and alcohol addictions.

The challenge is a relay-style contest which encompasses land and sea-based activities starting and finishing at Grève de Lecq. The competitors entered the water at 6 am for a team-building coasteering stage but the clock did not start ticking until 8.45 am when the runners left the pub car park at Devil’s Hole.

This year’s winners were the Dreamboats team led by Paul Wagstaffe, who got back to Grève de Lecq in four hours and 39 minutes. Rob Moye’s Plods On came down the cliff path from Plémont 16 minutes later to finish second with Jersey Electricity’s Fully Charged coming third, 1 hour 54 minutes after the winners crossed the finish line.

Jason Wyse, chief executive of the Silkworth Charity Group, said: ‘It all went very well and the conditions were near perfect, though the weather started to change when the competitors reached St Aubin’s Bay for the double kayak stage which made it a bit challenging.

‘I want to thank our sponsors, Sigma, all the volunteers who marshalled the stages, the parish authorities for giving us permission, especially as the Weekender was also taking place, and to Kazz and John Syvret and Eddie Le Gresley for providing boat cover for the coasteering stage.’
