Battlefield tour to honour WWI soldiers

The highlight of the tour will be on Saturday, when the party are due to join villagers in Guillemont, on the Somme, to mark the 101st anniversary of a battle involving the Jersey Contingent.

A memorial stone was unveiled there last year by the Bailiff, Sir William Bailhache, as part of the Island’s commemorations marking the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

On Saturday the Jersey party will lay a wreath on behalf of the Bailiff and Islanders.

The JEP has been publishing excerpts for Mr Ronayne’s book ‘Ours: The Jersey Pals in the First World War’, which tells the story of the Jersey Contingent, as part of its four-year centenary coverage of the Great War.

Editor Andy Sibcy said: ‘Thanks to Ian’s meticulous research, the story of the Jersey Pals, which had been largely forgotten, has been firmly re-established in Jersey’s history.

‘We hope that our readers will learn much from Ian and join him in paying their respects to the Islanders who fought so bravely as well as to honour those who never came home.’

The four-day tour, which will also visit Ypres in Belgium and other battlefield sites, has been organised by Go Tours.

Full report to follow next week.
