Islander describes Irma devastation

Rodney Boddy said that many areas, including the capital Road Town, have been hit badly.

Mr Boddy is one of a number of Islanders living in the BVI, where several Jersey-based legal firms have offices.

Several people have died in the islands and a state of emergency has been declared.

Dozens have been killed or injured across the Caribbean.

Mr Boddy said: ‘The Royal Navy have turned up and are helping out in the state of emergency.

‘Phone and internet is patchy. It is difficult at the moment to call in or out. It works but cut-off is a probability.

‘Communication is bad within the Islands as well. On my drive around today the damage to the buildings in Road Town was a sight to see.

‘It is sad to hear there were fatalities. I believe the most important thing right now… is for electricity and water to be up and running again.

‘But as with the aftermath of all natural disasters these things take time.’

Irma – one of the most powerful storms ever recorded – battered Cuba on Saturday.

Thousands of tourists, including Jersey residents, have already been evacuated from the area.

It was expected to strike parts of Florida on Sunday.
