Kayaker rescued in rough seas

The St Catherine inshore crew were called out at about 4 pm on Saturday after the man informed the Jersey Coastguard that he was sheltering in a cove east of Grève de Lecq.

His location was identified after he sent a photo to the duty officer.

The crew arrived at the scene, near Isle Agois, a short time later and the man and his kayak were taken on board. The kayaker was then returned to Grève de Lecq.

Nigel Sweeny, lifeboat operations manager for St Catherine’s RNLI, said: ‘The kayaker had acted sensibly in the circumstances. The sea conditions around Jersey can change quite dramatically with different states of the tide and, on recognising that he was in difficulties, this kayaker found shelter and called for help.

‘Anyone who is undertaking water-based activities in or around the coast away from lifeguarded beaches should follow the usual rules of letting someone know when and where they are going, carrying an effective means of communication in case they get into trouble, bearing in mind that mobile signals can be patchy off the north coast, and wearing suitable clothing.’
