Wheel fell off car on main road

Goncalo Jose da Silva Correia (32), of Rue de Sorel, St John, admitted charges of driving a defective vehicle and driving without insurance.

Legal adviser Advocate Darry Robinson told the Magistrate’s Court that the police received reports on the afternoon of Monday 24 April from witnesses who saw a wheel falling off a blue MG which pulled into the Motor Mall forecourt on Grande Route de St Jean.

Advocate Robinson said that when officers arrived they noticed the car had no windscreen insurance disc on display. It later turned out there was no insurance policy in place.

An inspection by DVS showed that the vehicle’s wheels were wrongly fitted, the tyre tread was worn, there were poorly maintained brakes, a defective windscreen wiper and oil leaking from the engine.

However, Advocate Robinson said that the prosecution would offer no evidence on a charge of dangerous driving which had been put at a previous hearing.

Advocate Lucy Marks, defending, said that the reason for no insurance was that Correia had recently purchased the MG and had not had time to get cover.

She asked that a period of community service be imposed as she said Correia did not have the means to pay a fine and added that the loss of his driving licence would have a significant impact on his ability to support his family.

Correia is due to be sentenced on 28 September.
