Man who opened other people’s mail could be deported

Pedro Miguel Quintal Antonio has admitted multiple charges of opening other people’s mail and stealing items including a Lloyds Bank debit card.

The offences took place between 1 March and 6 April this year at Redwood Apartments in Prince’s Tower Road, St Saviour.

Antonio has also admitted driving without insurance and holding a mobile phone while behind the wheel on 1 September on Route de la Haule, St Lawrence.

Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris said: ‘Now I am aware of the full nature of the offences, and the fact that he has only been here for 12 months, the question of deportation arises.’

Advocate Jane Grace, defending, said that it was Antonio’s wish to remain in the Island.

She said that he worked as a painter and decorator and also had a job as a kitchen porter in a local hotel.

‘He wants to earn money to support his family back in Portugal,’ she said. Advocate Grace said that her client had been assessed as suitable for community service by the Probation department.

As part of his bail conditions, Antonio was ordered not to leave the Island and to surrender his passport.

The case was adjourned until 5 October.
