Drunk man held up knife in town

Samuel Charles Artois, of Brooklyn Street, was seen stumbling around swearing to himself while carrying a packet of noodles, a bottle of whisky and a Chinese-style knife at 7.20 am on Sunday 20 August on Rue Le Masurier.

Artois (35) approached the victim and asked for a light for his cigarette.

Centenier Danny Scaife said that when the defendant went to light the cigarette he dropped the bottle, which smashed.

The Magistrate’s Court heard that after the complainant had given Artois a cigarette, the defendant picked up the knife and held it at the man’s chest level before offering him the blade.

The court heard that the man said no and told him to go away.

In a statement, the witness said: ‘When he offered me the knife I was a bit scared. The blade was pointing towards me, about 1 ft away.’

As a result of his actions, Artois was in breach of a 12-month binding-over order imposed for being drunk and disorderly in St Helier in the early hours of 1 April.

Relief Magistrate David Le Cornu said: ‘Even though you did not brandish it, having a knife in a public place is a very serious matter.’

Artois was ordered to complete a 12-month probation order and was banned from pubs and bars for a year after he admitted a charge of disorderly conduct. A charge of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place was dropped at a previous hearing.
