Care home approved for site in St Peter

LV Care Group have successfully applied to demolish Les Charrières and replace it with a new residential home with parking and landscaping. They also plan to alter the vehicle access and widen roads surrounding the site.

The plans, which replace previous proposals for nine homes to be built on the site, have been unanimously approved by the Planning Committee, subject to certain conditions.

Those conditions include a written commitment to the Parish of St Peter to fund a £65,000 resurfacing of the whole road.

The committee said that a requested contribution of £42,000 to help pay for a new cycle path in the west of the Island might be unnecessary.

The care home will be a mixture of nursing and high-end residential care, employing 50 staff around the clock in two shift patterns.

Neighbour Liz Lakeman raised concerns about certain aspects of the plans, including traffic management and light pollution in an area she said was home to a large amount of nocturnal wildlife such as owls and glow worms.

LV Care had already agreed to put together a transport plan and include provision for staff to be picked up and dropped off in one minibus.

Ian McDonald from architects Axis Mason said the development would create jobs and mean improvements to the landscape.

‘In our view the care home will have lesser impact than the nine new homes that have already been approved,’ he said.

The hotel closed in 2014 after more than 35 years in business. LV Care’s portfolio already includes Lavender Villa Residential, Lavender Villa Homecare and the Cheval Roc care home, which this week reopened after a landslide last year forced its closure.

Committee chairman Juliette Gallichan and members Constable Philip Le Sueur, and Deputies Russell Labey and Jeremy Maçon all approved the application.
